Self-ligating has less friction, so the adjustments feel different, while traditional and ceramic braces have more friction because of the rubber bands, and a tightening can sometimes feel tighter. The most common mistake is treating the day your braces come off as the finish line. It is not. Retainers go on right after, then you wear them periodically to hold the result. Skip them and you undo two years of work, fast. That is the fastest heartbreak I see. So we walk every patient through their retainer plan, properly.
So when a patient asks me if she can skip the retainer, here is what I actually say. A retainer is what keeps your teeth in their new position after braces. It is a must. Braces move your teeth, but the retainer holds them there while the bone and the gums adapt. Without wearing it, your teeth can gradually shift back, and you can end up with a real alignment problem again.
And one more thing about the day the braces come off, because it is my favourite day. Removing braces is careful work, not a snip. Most of the time we also whiten afterwards to get the full effect.
